Introduction:

For the first 178 TAGs, PCTs consultees were invited by NICE to contribute to the guidance but only two were actively involved. CSAS was established in 2009 to reverse this trend and help commissioner engagement into the development of NICE technology appraisals - ensuring a vital voice was heard.

CSAS is the first working example of collaborative commissioning across all PCTs in England, allowing Consultee PCTs to be supported by a specialist service at a minimum cost.  All PCTs now have a vehicle to help them inform national guidance, as well as access to evidence-based commissioning advice for local decision making.

The Objectives:

We will update and share with you what CSAS has achieved over the last year, discuss examples of real problems that we have encountered, and provide you with an opportunity to hear from PCT Consultees and from NICE.

Importantly, this meeting will be an opportunity to consider how NHS Commissioners (of specialised services, or local services) can continue to influence NICE guidance and what support you will need to be active consultees and ensure that important national guidance - 70 TAGs and 30 Care Quality Standards per annum are based on fully informed, evidence based decisions.
