Better workforce development

Challenges

In order to meet today’s and tomorrow’s public health challenges organisations must seek to develop and equip their workforces to be able to improve population health and reduce health inequalities. With the expectation that public health is everybody’s business, along with the need to deliver more for less, organisations can maximise health outcomes by building a workforce for the future which fully understands its contribution to health and wellbeing, is competent, valued and motivated.

What we do?

We work UK-wide across the full spectrum of the public health workforce from policy makers, specialists, practitioners, through to those who make a substantial contribution to the health and wellbeing of the population but who would not necessarily call themselves public health workers.  We work across all sectors, levels, professions and settings.

From our unique knowledge and understanding of the whole public health workforce we are able to help our clients plan, redesign and develop their workforces to bring about change and deliver public health solutions. We help them review their systems and functions and engage with their workforce so that they can together deliver their joint aspirations for public health improvement.

We then build capability and capacity by using competence frameworks to analyse development needs across all sectors of the workforce and implement plans to meet them, whether at whole system, organisation or individual level.

We are at the leading edge of workforce development at a national level. For example, the nationally recognised UK Public Health Skills and Career Framework we developed with Skills for Health has been widely used by employers, commissioners, providers and educators to embed public health in all sectors of the workforce. We have also led on the development of PHORCaST - a UK-wide website to inform public health career development.

The value we bring

Our knowledge:  We have over ten years of experience and expertise in developing the public health workforce. We bring a unique perspective because we work at local, regional and national levels.

Making connections:  Because our work is UK-wide and covers all sectors and levels, we are able to use our extensive networks to ensure we keep abreast of the key issues and maximise impact by sharing best practice.

A tailored approach:  We bring about change and deliver results through a tailored approach to meet the specific needs of our clients. We work with clients to help them fit their work in a national context and to deliver outcomes at a local or regional level.
